Building Preference Screen in SUSI Android

SUSI provides various preferences to the user in the settings to customize the app. This allows the user to configure the application according to his own choice. There are different preferences available such as to select the theme or the language for text to speech. Preference Setting Activity is an important part of an Android application. Here we will see how we can implement it in an Android app taking SUSI Android (https://github.com/fossasia/susi_android) as the example.

Firstly, we will proceed by adding the Gradle Dependency for the Setting Preferences

Then to create the custom style for our setting preference screen we can set

@style/PreferenceFixTheme

as the base theme and can apply various other modifications and color over this. By default it has the usual Day and Night theme with NoActionBar extension.

Now to make different preferences we can use different classes as shown below:

SwitchPreferenceCompat: This gives us the Switch Preference which we can use to toggle between two different modes in the setting.

EditTextPreference: This preference allows the user to give its own choice of number or string in the settings which can be used for different actions.

Implementation in SUSI Android

In SUSI Android we have created an activity named activity_settings which holds the Preference Fragment for the setting.

The Preference Settings Fragment contains different Preference categories that are implemented to allow the user to have different customization option while using the app. The pref_settings.xml is as follows

All the logic related to Preferences and their action is written in SettingsActivity Java class. It listens for any change in the preference options and take actions accordingly in the following way.

The class contains a ChatSettingFragment which extends the PreferenceFragmentCompat to give access to override functions such as onPreferenceClick. The code below shows the implementation of it.

Persistence Layer in Open Event Organizer Android App

Open Event Organizer is an Event Managing Android App with the core features of Attendee Check In by QR Code Scan and Data Sync with the Open Event API Server. As an event can be large, so the app will be dealing with a large amount of a data. Hence to avoid repetitive network requests for fetching the data, the app maintains a local database containing all the required data and the database is synced with the server. Android provides android.database.sqlite package which contains the API needed to use the database on the Android. But it is really not a good practice to use the sqlite queries everywhere in the app. So there comes a persistence layer. A persistence layer works between the database and the business logic. Open Event Organizer uses Raizlabs’s DbFlow, an ORM based Android Database Library for the same. I will be talking about its implementation through the app in this blog.

First of all, you declare the base class of the database which is used to create the database by Android for the app. You declare all the base constants here. The class looks like:

Initialise the database in the Application class using FlowManager provided by the library. Choose the Application class to do this to ensure that the library finds the generated code in the DbFlow.

The database is created now. For tables creation, DbFlow uses model classes which must be annotated using the annotations provided by the library. The basic annotations are – @Table, @PrimaryKey, @Column, @ForeignKey etc.

For example, the Attendee class in the app looks like:

This will create a table named attendee with the columns and relationships annotated. Now comes the part of accessing data from the database. Open Event App uses RxJava’s support to the DbFlow library which enables async data accessing. The getItems method from DataBaseRepository looks like:

DbFlow provides DirectModelNotifier which is used to get notified of the database change anywhere in the app. Open Event App uses PublishSubjects to send notifications on database change event. The implementation of the DatabaseChangeListener in the app looks like:

DatabaseChangeListener.java

The class is used in the app to get notified of the data change and to update the required local data fields using data from item emitted by the publishSubject of the class. This is used in the app where same data is accessed at more than one places. For example, There are two fragments – AttendeesFragment and AttendeeCheckInFragment from which an attendee’s check in status is toggled. So when the status is toggled from AttendeeCheckInFragment, the change must be updated in the AttendeesFragment’s attendees list. This is carried out using DatabaseChangeListener in the AttendeesPresenter which provides attendees list to the AttendeesFragment. And on the change in the attendee’s check in status, AttendeePresenter’s attendeeListener listens for the change and update the attendee in the list accordingly.

Selecting Best persistent storage for Phimpme Android and how to use it

As we are progressing in our Phimpme Android app. I added account manager part which deals with connecting all other accounts to phimpme. Showing a list of connected accounts.

We need a persistent storage to store all the details such as username, full name, profile image url, access token (to access API). I researched on various Object Relation mapping (ORMs) such as:

  1. DBFlow: https://github.com/Raizlabs/DBFlow
  2. GreenDAO: https://github.com/greenrobot/greenDAO
  3. SugarORM: http://satyan.github.io/sugar/
  4. Requery: https://github.com/requery/requery

and other NoSQL databases such as Realm Database : https://github.com/realm/realm-java.

After reading a lot from some blogs on the benchmarking of these ORMs and database, I came to know that Realm database is quite better in terms of Speed of writing data and ease of use.

Steps to integrate Realm Database:

  • Installation of Realm database in android

Following these steps https://realm.io/docs/java/latest/#installation quickly setup realm in android. Add

classpath "io.realm:realm-gradle-plugin:3.3.2"

in Project level build.gradle file and Add

apply plugin: 'realm-android' 

in app level build.gradle, That’s it for using Realm

  • Generating required Realm models

Firstly, make sure what you need to store in your database. In case of phimpme, I first go through the account section and noted down what needs to be there.  Profile image URL, username, full name, account indicator image name. Below image illustrate this better.

This is the Realm Model class I made in Kotlin to store name, username and access token for accessing API.

  • Writing data in database

In Account manager, I create a add account option from where a dialog appear with a list of accounts. Currently, Twitter is working, when onSuccess function invoke in AccountPickerFragment I start a twitter session and store values in database. Writing data in database:

  • Use Separate Database Helper class for Database operations

It’s good to use a separate class for all the Database operations needed in the project. I created a DatabaseHelper Class and added a function to query the result needed. Query the database

  • Problems I faced with annotation processor while using Kotlin and Realm together

The Kotlin annotation processor not running due to the plugins wrong order. This issue https://github.com/realm/realm-java/pull/2568 helped me in solving that. I addded apply plugin: ‘kotlin-kapt’. In app gradle file and shift apply plugin: ‘realm-android’ In below the order.

Porting Phimpme Android to Kotlin

As we are going ahead in Phimpme Project we are now on verge to start our account manager which deals with sharing images to many platforms right from the app. The account manager will take care of logging In the user. Saving it’s important credentials such access token, username etc as required by the API.

Google IO ‘17 just passed, and we seen tons of new features, APIs and development tools. One of the them is official support for Kotlin in Android Studio.

As stated by the developers at the conference that one best way to work on Kotlin is add today in your project. Because it is compatible with Java, we can work together on both languages in the same project. It is not mandatory for you to shift your entire code to Kotlin to build a project. So starting with the account manager we decided to bring this to our code. It helps in reducing the boilerplate code for example in Phimpme, I created a model for Realm database.

That’s all I need to create a model class, no need to create getter and setter property

This helps me to get details from getter methods and show on Account Manager Recycler View like below.

Step 1 : Upgrade to Android Studio Preview 3.0

Android Studio Preview 3.0 comes up with all new features and Kotlin support. We all upgraded to that. It has a great Android Profiler with advance features for debugging and logcat is now moved separately. This step is not mandatory, you can work on older version of Android Studio as well.

Step 2 : Configure Kotlin

It’s easy in Android Studio Preview 3.0 to configure Kotlin. Go to Tools → Kotlin → Configure Kotlin in project.

What in the configuration

  • It added a classpath dependency in project level build.gradle file
classpath"org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-gradle-plugin:$kotlin_version"
  • Added Kotlin plugin
apply plugin: 'kotlin-android'
  • Added kotlin std lib in app level build.gradle

Step 3: How to add Kotlin files

Now your project is ready for Kotlin. In Android Studio Preview 3.0 you can create new Kotlin files from the file menu.

Also by using Activity template you can select the source language as Java or Kotlin as per your preference.

Step 4 : Work with Kotlin

There are a lot new features in Kotlin to explore. Some of them are

  • Null Safety : In Kotlin, the type system distinguishes between references that can hold null (nullable references) and those that can not (non-null references). For example, a regular variable of type String cannot hold null.

To allow nulls, we can declare a variable as nullable string, written String?:

 b = null // ok
  • Val and Var are two keywords in Kotlin to declare variables. Val gives you read only variable which is same as final modifier in Java, it is not changing. In other words it is immutable Data variables. Var is mutable data variable
  • Semicolons (;) are optional
  • No switch it’s when block in Kotlin. No need to write break and case: below is snippet from phimpme app

Hotword Detection in SUSI Android App using Snowboy

Hotword Detection is as cool as it sounds. What exactly is hotword detection? Hotword detection is a feature in which a device gets activated when it listens to a specific word or a phrase. You must have said “OK Google” or “Hey Cortana” or “Siri” or “Alexa” at least once in your lifetime. These all are hotwords which trigger the specific action attached to them. That specific action can be anything.

Implementing hotword detection from scratch in SUSI Android is not an easy task. You have to define language model, train the model and do various other processes before implementing it in Android. In short, not feasible to implement that along with the code of our Android app. There are many open source projects on hotword detection and speech recognition. They already have done what we need and we can make use of it. One such project is Snowboy. According to Snowboy GitHub repo “Snowboy is a DNN based hotword and wake word detection toolkit.”

In SUSI Android App, we have used Snowboy for hotword detection with hotword as “susi” (pronounced as ‘suzi’). In this blog, I will tell you how Hotword detection is implemented in SUSI Android app. So, you can just follow the steps and you will be able to implement it in your application too or if you want to contribute in SUSI android app, it may help you a little in knowing the codebase better.

Pre Processing before Implementation

1. Generating Hotword Model

The start of implementation of hotword detection begins with creating a hotword model from snowboy website https://snowboy.kitt.ai/dashboard . Just log in and search for susi and then train it by saying “susi” thrice and download the susi.pmdl file.

There are two types of models:

  1. .pmdl : Personal Model
  2. .umdl : Universal Model

The personal model is specifically trained for you and is instantly available for you to download once you train the hotword by your voice. On the other hand, the Universal model is trained by minimum 500 hundred people and is only available once it is trained. So, we are going to use personal model for now since training of universal model is not yet completed.

2. Adding some predefined native binary files in your app.

Once you have downloaded the susi.pmdl file and you need to copy some already written native binary file in your app.

    1. In your assets folder, make a directory named snowboy and add your downloaded susi.pmdl file along with this file in it.
    2. Copy this folder and add it in your  /app/src/main/java folder as it is. These are autogenerated swig files. So, don’t change it unless you know what you are doing.
    3. Also, create a new folder in your /app/src/main folder called jniLibs and add these files to it.

You now have everything ready. Now you just need to implement some code in your MainActivity and you are good to go. Initiate Hotword detection in the app by using below written code snippet. The call initHotword() method from your onCreate method in MainActivity. Make sure you have given permission to RECORD_AUDIO and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE.

In the above code under case, MSG_ACTIVE add your code which needs to be executed once hotword is detected. Now, hotword detection is initiated and you just have to start recording and stop recording whenever you want.

To start recording : (can be written in onStart() method)

So, this this is the simple process to add hotword detection feature in your app.

Though this is great and will word wonderfully for you but it has a little problem and a solution which is discussed below.

Problems for now and future steps

As mentioned above, the susi.pmdl model is a personal model and only trained for your voice. So, it will work wonderfully for you and for people with a similar voice like you but not for everyone. There are two ways to make this solve this problem:

  1. Replace susi.pmdl with susi.umdl: This is very easy way to fix this problem. But to get the susi.umdl file at least 500 people have to train susi hotword on snowboy website. Once that target is achieved, you can download susi.umdl file and replace it with susi.pmdl file and you are good to go.
  2. Train and obtain susi.pmdl file for each user: Right now you trained and used your own personal model for everyone but there is a way you can use every user’s own personal model in the app. Now hotword will be trained by the user himself in the app. Snowboy provides a training API http://docs.kitt.ai/snowboy/#api-v1-train to train the hotword and getting personal model. Quoting snowboy docs “You can define truly customized hotword for each of your end customer. Just ask them to say the hotword 3 times and a model will be trained on the fly!”

Adding Pinterest Integration in Phimpme Android

After establishing Facebook and Twitter share in Phimpme, our next goal was to integrate more social networking sites. Pinterest is an ideal website for us as it is widely used among various photography enthusiasts. Our goal was to share the image on the Pinterest website without the use of any other native android application.

Note: First, we added Phimpme app in the developer section https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/. This step is crucial as it generates APP ID and it is necessary for authentication.

Adding Pinterest option in Accounts Activity in Phimpme

In accounts activity, we have added a list of accounts that we have integrated in a Recyclerview. Currently, we have integrated Facebook and Twitter. We need to add Pinterest App icon and Pinterest option in the Recyclerview.

To add Pinterest app icon I downloaded the icon from iconfinder in SVG format. Using SVG format allows icon to resize itself according to the screen sizes of the users. We saved the icon file name as ic_pinterest_black.xml

We made an array of all the accounts list in the Accounts Activity. I added Pinterest in the array list. This array list is inflated in the Accounts Activity.

To add the icon the recyclerview, we have to get the resource id from the drawable folder and then set is in the recyclerview. We have done it dynamically so that we don’t have to fetch the id of every accounts icons.

To import the Pinterest SDK in the project, please download the Pinterest SDK from the link: http://assets.pinterest.com/sdk/android-pdk.tar. Go to File->import new module->Import Gradle Project. Build the project, if there is any error resolve the error and then build Gradle again.

Add APP ID in the manifest file of the project

We need to add the APP ID that was generated while making the app the Pinterest in the manifest folder of the Phimpme Android. In the case of Phimpme, we have added the APP ID in the intent filter in the Accounts Activity. This is necessary for the interaction of the Phimpme with the Pinterest website.

Establishing Pinterest authentication in Accounts Activity

First, we need to import all the necessary class from the Pinterest SDK. These class includes callback functions, PDKClient which manages the interface between the Phimpme app and the Pinterest website. We need to pass the APP ID in the PDKClient function as an argument and also the view in the onConnect function in PDKClient.

Before signing In we need to check if we are already signed in or not. This is how we have done in  Phimpme app. If the app is already signed In a Toast will pop up showing that it already signed In.

Passing the view, scope array and PDKCallback as arguments in the login function

I have passed the view, scope array list and PDKCallback as arguments in the login function in PDKClient class. This will initiate the authentication process and the user will be redirected to the Pinterest web page after the user has filled up the credentials properly and logged in to the Pinterest the user will be redirected to the Phimpme accounts page. If the user has logged In successfully onSuccess function with being called where PDKResponse will pass an argument. This response object can be used to fetch the username of the logged In user or the Pin and the BoardID of the user.

Inserting the credentials to the Realm Database

We have used the Realm database to store all the accounts credentials in one place. This is necessary for the maintenance and to check if the user is logged or not. AccountName array holds the list of the name which is added to the database.

Uploading images to Dropbox from the Phimpme App

The Phimpme Android application along with the camera, gallery and image editing features offers the option to upload images to many social media and cloud storages without having to install several other applications. As we can see from the screenshot below, Phimpme application contains a user-friendly accounts screen to connect to the accounts using a username and password so that we can upload photos from the share screen to that particular account later on.

One such famous cloud storage is the Dropbox and in this tutorial, I am explaining how I implemented the account authentication and image uploading feature to Dropbox in the Phimpme Android application.

Step 1

The first thing we need to do is to create an application in the Dropbox application console and to get the app key and the API secret key which we will require later on for the authentication purposes. To create an application on the Dropbox application console page,

  1. Go to this link. It will open a page as depicted in the screenshot below:
  2. Now click on the Dropbox API option.
  3. Click on App folder – access to a single folder created specifically for your app.
  4. Write the name of your application and press the create app button.

After this, we will be redirected to the page which will contain all the keys required to authenticate and upload photos.

Step 2

After getting the keys, the next thing we need to do is install the Dropbox SDK. To do this:

  1. Download the Android SDK from this link and extract it.
  2. Copy the dropbox-android-sdk-1.6.3.jar and json_simple-1.1.jar file to the libs folder.
  3. Click on the add as library button by right clicking on the jar files added.
  4. Copy the below-mentioned code in the AndroidManifest.xml file which defines the dropbox login activity within a new activity tag.

In the 7th line of the code snippet, replace the app_key with the key you received from following the step 1.

Step 3

After setting up everything, we need to extract the access token for the user to upload the photos in that particular account. To do this, we can make use of the below code snippet, which uses the dropbox SDK we installed in step 2 to create an object named mDBApi and initialises it to authenticate the user.

After initialisation in the onCreate method of the activity, we can authenticate the user using the following line of code.

This will open up a window where the user will be prompted to login to their dropbox account. After the login is finished, we will be taken back to the activity which made the authentication call, so in the onResume method, we need to get the access token of the user which will be used later on to upload the images using the following code snippet provided below:

After we have stored the access token, we can upload the selected image to the Dropbox using the following line of code.

Adding Unit Test For Local JSON Parsing in Open Event Android App

The Open Event project uses JSON format for transferring event information like tracks, sessions, microlocations and other. The event exported in the zip format from the Open Event server also contains the data in JSON format. The Open Event Android application uses this JSON data. Before we use this data in the app, we have to parse the data to get Java objects that can be used for populating views. There is a chance that the model and the JSON format changes in future. It is necessary that the models are able to parse the JSON data and the change in the model or JSON format don’t break JSON parsing.  In this post I explain how to unit test local JSON parsing so that we can ensure that the models are able to parse the local JSON sample data successfully.

Firstly we need to access assets from the main source set into the unit test. There is no way to directly access assets from main source set. We need to first add assets in test/resources directory. If assets are present in test/resources directory then we can use it using ClassLoader in the unit test. But we can’t just copy assets from the main source set to resources directory. If there is any change in sample JSON then we need to maintain both resources and it may make the sample inconsistent. We need to make assets shared.

Add the following code in the app level build.gradle file.

It will add src/main/assets as a source directory for test/resources directory.So after building the project the test will have access to the assets.

Create readFile() method

Now create a method readFile(String name) which takes a filename as a parameter and returns data of the file as a string.

Here the getResourceAsStream() function is used to open file as a InputStream. Then we are creating byte array object of size same as inputStream data. Using read function we are storing data of file into byte array. After this we are creating a String object using a byte array.

Create ObjectMapper object

Create and initialize an ObjectMapper object in the Test class.

        objectMapper.configure(DeserializationFeature.FAIL_ON_UNKNOWN_PROPERTIES, true);

Here setting DeserializationFeature.FAIL_ON_UNKNOWN_PROPERTIES to true is very important. It will fail the test for any unrecognized fields in the sample.

Create doModelDeserialization() method

In the Open Event Android App we are using Jackson for JSON serialization and deserialization. Converting JSON data to java is called deserialization or parsing.

Now create doModelDeserialization() method which takes three parameters,

  • Class<T> type: Model Class type of the data
  • String name: Name of the JSON data file
  • boolean isList: true if JSON string contains the list of object else false

This method returns true if parsing is successful and false if there is any error in parsing.

Here ObjectMapper is doing the main work of parsing data and returns parsed object using readValue() method.

Add Test

Now all the setup is done we just need to assert value returned by doModelDeserialization() method by passing appropriate parameters.

Here only event JSON file doesn’t have a list of the objects so passing false as isList parameter for others we are passing true because its data contains a list of objects.

Generic Social Links Implementation in Open Event Android App

The Open Event Android App has an About Fragment which displays all the info about the event like name, time, location etc. It also shows social media buttons for the event. The problem was that the implementation of showing the social media buttons was not generic. The implementation was working fine for current FOSSASIA sample. If we generate the app for other events it creates a problem. It shows static buttons without proper mapping from social media button to social media link which creates a problem like on clicking GitHub button it opens Facebook link (issue #1792).

One solution to this problem is to implement recyclerview with social media buttons. In this post I explain how I have made social links implementation generic using RecyclerView.

Add RecyclerView in layout

The first step to do is to add recyclerview in the layout xml file and to create a list item for recyclerview which holds the image for the social link button. Then in the About Fragment find recyclerview element added in the xml file using findFragmentById() method.

1. Add recyclerview in xml file

In the layout xml file of About Fragment add recyclerview element. Define id, width, height, and gravity of recyclerview. Then specify list item for recyclerview using listitem attribute.

Now create a item_social_link.xml file and add a FrameLayout element. Inside the FrameLayout add an ImageView with appropriate id, width, height and padding.

Add and initialize RecyclerView

After adding recyclerview in xml file we need to add RecyclerView field in the About Fragment java file. Now add and initialize SocialLinksListAdapter which extends RecyclerView.Adapter and will be used for populating the recyclerview with the social links.

Here mSocialLinks is the list of social links which is fetched from the Event object.

Create ViewHolder for social link button

Now create SocialLinkViewHolder which extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder and holds one social link item defined in item_social_link.xml file. This file is where the magic happens. Add ImageView, FrameLayout, SocialLink and context fields in it.

The bindSocialLink(SocialLink socialLink) method is called in the onBindViewHolder() method of the SocialLinksListAdapter. In this method initialize socialLink field and set drawable for ImageView according to SocialLink name using setImageDrawable() method.

The setImageDrawable() method finds and sets appropriate image for social link button using the name of the social link. If the image for the social link is not found then it sets the visibility of the image view to GONE using showView(boolean show).

The showView(boolean show) method handles visibility of ImageView and ImageView’s parent FrameLayout using setVisibility() method.

Set onClickListener to ImageView

Now it’s time to set the onClickListener in the constructor of the SocialLinkViewHolder to define what to do when user clicks on the ImageView.

Here we are setting custom tab for the social link using the setUpCustomTab() util method which will open the link.

The SocialLink impementation using the RecyclerView gives the great user experience in the application.

Presenters via Loaders in Open Event Organizer Android App

Open Event Organizer‘s App design follows Model View Presenter (MVP) architecture which facilitates heavy unit testing of the app. In this design pattern, each fragment/activity implements a view interface which uses a presenter interface to interact with a model interface. The presenter contains most of the data of the view. So it is very important to restore presenters after configuration changes like rotation. As on rotation, the complete activity is re-created hence all the fields are destroyed and as a result, everything is re-generated resulting in state loss on configuration change which is unexpected. Open Event Organizer App uses the loader to store/provide presenters to the activity/fragment. Loader survives configuration changes. The idea of using the loader to provide presenter is taken from Antonio Gutierrez’s blog on “Presenters surviving orientation changes with loaders“.

The first thing to do is make a PresenterLoader<T> class extending Loader<T> where T is your presenter’s base interface. The PresenterLoader class in the app looks like:

The methods are pretty clear from the names itself. Once this is done, now you are ready to use this loader in for your fragment/activity. Creating a BaseFragment or BaseActivity will be clever as then you don’t have to add same logic everywhere. We will take a use case of an activity. A loader has a unique id by which it is saved in the app. Use unique id for each fragment/activity. Using the id, the loader is obtained in the app.

When creating for the first time, the loader is set up with the loader callbacks where we actually set a presenter logic. In the Organizer App, we are using dagger dependency injection for injecting presenter in the app for the first time. If you are not using the dagger, you should create PresenterFactory class containing create method for the presenter. And pass the PresenterFactory object to the PresenterLoader in onCreateLoader. In this case, we are using dagger so it simplifies to this:

getPresenterProvider method returns Lazy<Presenter> provider to ensure single presenter creation in the activity/fragment. The lifecycle to setup PresenterLoader in activity is onCreate and in the fragment is onActivityCreated. Use presenter field from next lifecycle that is start. If the presenter is used before the start, it creates null pointer exception. For example, if implementing with the BaseFragment, setup loader in onActivityCreated method.

Make sure that your base interface implements some of the basic methods. For example, onDetach, onAttach etc. getLoaderId method must be implemented in each fragment/activity using loaders. The method returns unique id for each fragment/activity. In Organizer App, the method returns layout id of the fragment/activity as a unique id.

Using the loader approach to store/restore presenters helps in surviving their instances in configuration changes in the app. Hence improves the performance.
