Contract Basis | Location: Remote

As a frontend contractor you will collaborate with our team to bring the Open Event project hosted on eventyay.com to the next level. The goal of your project is to help to make the transition from Ember.JS to Vue.JS. We define the scope through a list of dedicated issues that are posted on our repository and which you need to solve as part of this project. For some issues minor changes in the Python/Flask backend might be required where you need to align with the responsible developer. The new version of eventyay used Vue.js as a frontend technology and Flask as a backend. The team follows best practices, uses scrum emails for the daily standup and Gitter chat for chat communication.

After successful completion of the project options are to take on a follow up freelance project or to be hired. Future opportunities are to work from our bases in Singapore or Germany.

  • Write unit tests for all portions of your code and add missing tests where applicable in the features handled
  • Work according to FOSSASIA Best Practices

Requirements

  • Strong expertise of Vue.JS and basic knowledge of Ember.js
  • Experience developing HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Experience with Continuous Integration tests
  • Understanding of best practices for web development and software design
  • Good spoken/written English

Python / JS Full Stack Developer for Open Event Project

STATUS: ACTIVE

As a Full Stack Engineer at FOSSASIA, you’ll work together with a global community to develop the Open Event project and to maintain our web service at eventyay.com. Our services are entirely Free/Open Source. We use Flask as a backend and Ember.js (transitioning to React) as a frontend technology. The system is deployed on a Hetzner cloud server. You’ll own what you build, making technical decisions and applying our best practices to every piece of code. The team uses scrum emails for the daily standup and Gitter for continuous chat communication.

Candidates who have started contributing code to one of our projects and to the Open Event backend and frontend specifically will have an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Assume leadership and responsibility for the technical tasks and deliverables
  • Become project owner of Open Event development and provide daily code commits
  • Deploy project on the server using Docker
  • Write unit tests for all portions of our applications
  • Automate the software deployment process
  • Support community developers and review PRs
  • Work according to FOSSASIA Best Practices
  • Provide daily scrums, code contributions and communicate on chat
  • Participate and lead weekly developer meeting
  • Ensure related apps (Android/iOS) work with APIs and review PRs
  • Take on responsibilities in other FOSSASIA projects as needed

Requirements

  • Experience working in a remote setting, or with a remote team and across multiple time zones
  • Professional experience using HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Experience with Flask/Python
  • Experience with Ember.js and ReactJS (or the desire to learn it)
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Docker
  • Understanding of best practices for web development and software design
  • Not afraid of going deep on backend code to understand features
  • Enjoy writing tested and modular code
  • Working time overlaps with European and Singapore time
  • You have good spoken/written English
  • Self-motivated and independent

The schedule is out and the FOSSASIA Summit will finally take place again in-person! Please join us for the event at the Lifelong Learning Institute Singapore from April 13-15, 2023.

During the three day event professionals, developers, companies, researchers and tech communities get together to share projects and ideas, learn from each other, and network. Over 150 International speakers will join us and show what is possible with technology today. Catering is provided throughout the event.

A big topic currently everywhere is AI and ChatGPT. In the artificial intelligence track we will talk about how to build, deploy and run large AI systems using in-house data and Open Source and discuss how the technology can benefit humanity in a rapidly changing world.

The FOSSASIA Summit is an annual event for professionals, developers, companies, researchers and tech communities from around the world. During the three day event participants get together in Singapore to share projects and ideas, learn from each other, and network. The event is one of the longest running IT conferences in Asia.

FOSSASIA Summit 2022 Call for Speakers and Sign-Up

The FOSSASIA Summit 2022 will take place online from April 7-9.

While all of us are still learning to cope with the pandemic, it is very important that we get together, exchange ideas, collaborate on projects and together develop solutions that tackle our global issues.

2021 was a very challenging year for us as we lost our friend and core maintainer Areeb Jamal. Many of FOSSASIA members in the region were struggling to fight against Covid. Despite all the difficulties, we managed to continue our work in the area of open hardware with Pocket Science Lab, improving our collaborative event platform Eventyay and once again supporting more students to become open source contributors and developers via our CodeHeat program.
